Trump and Carney Agree to Negotiate New Trade Deal

Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump announced plans to establish a mutually beneficial trade deal following months of tariffs and conflict.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday that their respective teams will work over the coming weeks to establish a mutually beneficial trade deal. The agreement follows a period of intense conflict that began in August when negotiations collapsed, resulting in the United States imposing 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion in Canadian goods and prompting retaliatory measures from Canada.

Disputes center on the steel, aluminum, and automotive sectors, as well as Canadian regulations regarding French-language content on streaming platforms. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick alleged that Canadian negotiators attempted to derail the August deal by raising truck tariff relief at the last minute, a claim disputed by Canada's chief U.S. trade negotiator Janice Charette, who stated the issue was raised throughout that week.

The announcement occurs shortly before the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, with the trade war emerging as a political issue in states such as Maine and Michigan. While Carney characterized the recent discussions as constructive, some sources indicate that key elements remain unresolved. In a parallel effort to diversify its economic ties, Canada launched a new economic and security alliance with the European Union on Friday.
