Trump and Carney Negotiate New U.S.-Canada Trade Framework

President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are conducting direct, discreet negotiations to establish a new bilateral trade and security framework. The talks involve top cabinet officials, including Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

The proposed agreement focuses on increasing U.S. content in the automotive sector and improving American access to Canadian critical minerals. Other key priorities include expanding Canada's role in the Arctic, addressing energy and border security, and combating fentanyl. The U.S. is also seeking increased defense spending from allies to confront China.

U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra disclosed the existence of the secret talks, noting the urgency of the discussions. While a final deal could be reached by September, Ontario Premier Doug Ford suggested an agreement might be imminent. These negotiations are strictly bilateral and do not include Mexico.
