Donald Trump Calls for New Ukrainian Leader Amid Energy Dispute
President Donald Trump urged Ukraine to replace Volodymyr Zelenskyy after Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries drove up U.S. diesel prices.
President Donald Trump called for Ukraine to elect a new president, asserting that Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected opportunities to negotiate an end to the war with Russia. Speaking at the White House, Trump argued that Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries undermine global energy supplies and increase fuel costs for American farmers and ranchers. This diplomatic pressure follows a U.S. agreement with Moscow to purchase Russian diesel to lower fuel prices ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, a move Zelenskyy condemned as a gift to Vladimir Putin.
In response, Zelenskyy offered to stop striking Russian refineries if Russia ceases its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. He emphasized that any de-escalation must be mutual and supported by real guarantees. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha defended the president, stating that the Ukrainian people have the right to decide their leadership. Billionaire Elon Musk publicly supported Trump's position, stating that Ukraine needs a new leader.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom reaffirmed its solidarity with Zelenskyy. British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting attributed Trump's remarks to domestic political pressure over fuel costs and identified Vladimir Putin as the aggressor who started the war. On the ground, the conflict intensified as Ukraine launched drone strikes against Yandex data centers in Vladimir, Russia, while Russian bombings in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, killed 23 people, including four children.
