Hezbollah Rejects US-Brokered Ceasefire as Regional Conflict Escalates

Hezbollah rejected a US-mediated ceasefire with Israel, prompting renewed airstrikes in Lebanon and escalating diplomatic tensions between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Iran.

A US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese government collapsed after Naim Qassem, Secretary-General of Hezbollah, rejected the Washington Declaration on June 4, 2026. Qassem denounced the terms—which required Hezbollah to cease fire and evacuate operatives south of the Litani River—as a humiliating surrender. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu subsequently halted a Security Cabinet vote on the deal, stating no agreement exists until Hezbollah accepts the terms.

Hostilities intensified following the rejection. The Israel Defense Forces reported the death of Captain Eitan Shmuel Lemberg on June 4, prompting retaliatory strikes in Tyre and other southern Lebanese villages. While Israeli forces withdrew from the village of Dibbine—the first such withdrawal since the war began on March 2—they continued airstrikes that killed several civilians and a Hezbollah engineering commander, Abed Harb. Hezbollah responded with coordinated rocket and drone barrages targeting Israeli armored vehicles and positions.

Diplomatic friction surged as Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Iran of using Lebanon as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected these claims, urging Aoun to focus on Israel as the real foe. Meanwhile, regional instability expanded as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked US-linked positions in Kuwait and Bahrain, and a suspected drone attack disrupted oil loading at Oman's Mina al Fahal terminal, causing volatility in global crude prices.
