Israel Marks October 7 Anniversary Amid Election Tensions

Israel commemorated the third anniversary of the Hamas attacks with memorials and military alerts as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a critical national election.

Israel observed the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks with state ceremonies in Jerusalem and civilian vigils at the Nova music festival site and Kibbutz Kfar Aza. This anniversary marks the first since all hostages were returned. During a state memorial at Mount Herzl, Benjamin Netanyahu vowed there would be "no forgiveness for the murderers" and asserted that Hamas would not rule Gaza. He defended Israel's military actions against Iran and rejected genocide accusations as "the greatest lie of the century."

Security remained high as Defense Minister Israel Katz placed the military on high alert following intelligence that Hamas planned anniversary attacks. Katz ordered the military to hunt down the remaining 2,000 of the 6,000 attackers who crossed the border three years ago. Despite a fragile US-brokered ceasefire from October 2025, Israel conducted airstrikes in Gaza during the commemorations, resulting in several Palestinian deaths.

The anniversary coincides with a fierce campaign for the October 27 general election. Opponents, including Naftali Bennett and Yair Golan, characterized the initial security breach as a "colossal failure" and criticized Netanyahu for blocking an independent commission of inquiry. Internationally, the event highlighted strained relations with Australia and ongoing confrontations with Iran, with President Donald Trump relocating U.S. B-1 bombers from the UK due to Iranian drone threats. In Gaza, the conflict has left over 74,000 Palestinians dead and the majority of the population displaced.
