Republicans Seek to Delay Recess for Save America Act

Nearly two dozen Republican senators are urging the cancellation or delay of the five-week August recess to ensure the passage of the Save America Act. Backed by Donald Trump, the legislation would mandate voter ID and proof of citizenship for voters. Rick Scott stated that lawmakers intend to utilize the reconciliation framework already passed in the House to secure the bill and avoid a filibuster, which Senate Majority Leader John Thune has refused to eliminate.

Simultaneously, the Senate is considering the confirmation of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. The nomination faces significant opposition, including from Senator Susan Collins, who argues that Blanche's actions eroded the independence of the Justice Department.

Democrats have also criticized the nominee over his decision to rescind an anti-weaponization fund. Senator Richard Blumenthal noted that the document rescinding the fund is not binding and that Blanche could issue the same order again, while Senator Cory Booker characterized the rescission as unenforceable.
