Israel Expands West Bank Offensives and Refugee Camp Seizures

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the Israel Defense Forces on July 28, 2026, to expand offensive operations in the West Bank and prepare to seize an unnamed Palestinian refugee camp. This strategy, supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, replicates a model used in Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams, involving the evacuation of residents and the dismantling of militant infrastructure to establish a permanent military presence. Katz claimed this approach led to an 80% decrease in terrorist activity between 2025 and 2026.

The escalation follows a fatal confrontation in the village of Tal on July 24, where four Palestinians and two Israelis died after villagers confronted armed settlers. In response, Israeli forces conducted wide-ranging raids across Nablus, Hebron, Jenin, and Ramallah, arresting between 22 and 80 Palestinians and demolishing multiple homes. Katz also announced plans to establish dozens of new Jewish settlements and stated the military would not withdraw from held areas in the Gaza Strip, Syria, and Lebanon.

Concurrent violence continues in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli forces killed three Palestinians by July 27, totaling over 1,200 deaths since a October 2025 ceasefire. In the West Bank, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs documented more than 1,330 settler attacks since January 2026, which included the burning of homes and mosques. UN Secretary-General António Guterres characterized these settlements as a "flagrant violation" of international law.
