India and US Reach Final Stages of Trade Deal
India and the United States have nearly finalized a bilateral trade agreement, with officials reporting that 98-99 percent of negotiations are complete.
The United States and India are nearing the conclusion of a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), with a senior U.S. official reporting that negotiations are 98-99 percent complete. Nirmala Sitharaman, India's Finance Minister, called for the early finalization of the deal during the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, stating that the agreement would benefit both bilateral economic ties and global trade.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal noted that the first tranche of the BTA is finalized and currently undergoing legal drafting. The process encountered delays after the International Emergency Economic Powers Act was struck down, requiring negotiators to revise the legal framework. However, high-level discussions between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have since resolved the most significant remaining issues.
To finalize the agreement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit Mumbai and Jamnagar to meet with government officials and business executives. The United States is specifically seeking deeper cooperation in defense, information technology, and pharmaceuticals, while emphasizing Indian investment in the U.S. U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed that the broad framework of the agreement is already finalized.
