Putin and Pezeshkian Strengthen Ties at SCO Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met on the sidelines of the 26th annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. During the meeting, Putin declared that Russia stands in "full solidarity with the people of Iran" and praised the regime's resilience in pursuing its national interests.

President Pezeshkian characterized the relationship as "strategic" and "more than just 'normal' relations," asserting that the partnership allows both nations to resist U.S. bias and sanctions. The meeting took place as U.S. President Donald Trump pursued an "Economic D-Day" strategy intended to collapse the Iranian economy through a near-total financial blockade, with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent demanding international cooperation for the effort.

The summit served as a forum for Russia and China to balance U.S. power and provide a diplomatic and economic alternative for states targeted by sanctions. While Putin provided significant support for Iran, Chinese President Xi Jinping maintained a lower profile during his meeting with Pezeshkian to avoid complicating a planned visit to Washington. The partnership remains driven by mutual dependency, with Russia seeking Iranian missile production and Iran relying on Russian intelligence, technology, and political support at the U.N. Security Council.
