US Envoy Steve Witkoff Visits Moscow for Ukraine Talks
Steve Witkoff, special envoy for President Donald Trump, traveled to Moscow to negotiate a breakthrough in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Special envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow on August 3, 2025, to seek a breakthrough in negotiations regarding the conflict in Ukraine. The visit, announced by President Donald Trump and confirmed by U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, follows several previous meetings between Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov later confirmed that President Putin may meet with Witkoff during the week of August 4. Peskov characterized the ongoing contacts with Witkoff as "meaningful and very useful," stating that the United States is maintaining its mediation efforts to find a resolution to the war.
While discussing diplomatic openings, Peskov noted that President Putin has not ruled out a future meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, though he cautioned that necessary expert-level preparatory work remains unfinished. Separately, Putin scheduled a meeting with Denis Pushilin, head of the Donetsk People's Republic, to discuss priorities regarding Russia's new regions.
