Netanyahu and Trump Meet in Washington Over Iran Strategy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., on July 28 to address diverging strategies for ending a five-month joint military campaign against Iran. Netanyahu sought to ensure that any diplomatic resolution includes the total halt of Iran's nuclear capabilities or the collapse of the Iranian regime. During the meeting, Netanyahu presented intelligence alleging that Iran has secretly moved nuclear infrastructure and centrifuges to the Pickaxe Mountain complex near Natanz to rebuild its program in bad faith.

President Trump has sent conflicting signals, oscillating between optimism for a negotiated peace and threats of renewed military action. While Trump recently warned that the U.S. would hit Pickaxe Mountain "pretty soon," reports suggest his inner circle is increasingly skeptical of Netanyahu's claims. Additionally, Trump has restricted Israeli strikes on Iranian energy targets to avoid a global oil crisis, though he has threatened to target Iranian bridges and power plants if negotiations fail.

Simultaneously, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the Israel Defense Forces are prepared to strike Iran independently to "set Iran back 40 years." This comes as the two leaders also navigate tensions over U.S. sales of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey and a U.S.-Saudi nuclear deal. The visit coincided with both leaders attending the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham at the National Cathedral.
