European Leaders Push for Direct Diplomacy with Vladimir Putin

Leaders from France, Italy, and Germany are shifting toward direct diplomacy with Russia to establish a peace agreement in Ukraine. Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, expressed the necessity of involving Russia in negotiations. Macron and Meloni specifically urged the European Union to appoint a dedicated envoy to engage with President Vladimir Putin.

This strategic shift is driven by European concerns that the United States, under President Donald Trump, might strike a deal with Russia that leaves Europe sidelined. Friedrich Merz stated that a peace agreement in Ukraine is impossible without the consent of Russia, while the European Commission acknowledged that talks with Putin will eventually be necessary.

The Kremlin welcomed this evolution in European strategy. Vladimir Putin stated that Russia is ready to restore relations, provided that its national interests and security concerns are respected. The Federal Government of Russia described the shift in European rhetoric as a positive evolution in strategic vision.
