Trump and Iran Reach Peace Deal to End War

President Donald Trump announced a framework agreement with Iran to end a three-month war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and dismantle Iran's nuclear program.

President Donald Trump announced a comprehensive peace deal with Iran on June 14, 2026, ending a conflict that began in February with U.S. and Israeli strikes. Brokered by Pakistan, the agreement—known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding—mandates an immediate ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon, and the removal of the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. A central provision is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which Trump ordered to be toll-free to restore global oil flow.

The framework establishes a 60-day window to finalize technical details regarding the destruction of Iran's highly enriched uranium. In exchange, the U.S. committed to phased sanctions relief and a reconstruction package for Iran. However, a significant dispute remains over frozen assets; while Iranian media reported an immediate release of $12 billion toward a total of $24 billion, U.S. officials countered that no funds have been released and that any future payments follow a pay-for-performance model.

Israel is not a party to the agreement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israel will not withdraw from security zones in Lebanon, Syria, or Gaza, maintaining the right to act independently to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The formal signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 19, in Geneva, Switzerland, with the final treaty requiring ratification by the United Nations Security Council.
