Iran and Israel Exchange Missile Strikes Over Hezbollah Targets

Iran launched direct missile attacks on Israel after Israeli strikes in Beirut, signaling a new strategic doctrine to defend its regional proxies.

A cycle of escalation between Israel and Iran erupted on June 8, 2026, after Benjamin Netanyahu ordered strikes against Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut's Dahiyeh district. Iran responded with two rounds of missile and drone barrages targeting Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Israeli airbases, including Nevatim and Tel Nof. In a strategic shift, Tehran declared that attacks on its regional proxies, specifically Hezbollah, would now be treated as direct attacks on Iran.

Israel retaliated with fighter jet strikes against Iranian missile launchers and the Karun Petrochemical Company in Bandar-e Mahshahr. IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir stated these operations were preparations for a more significant blow, though Netanyahu reportedly canceled a deeper strike following pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.

By June 9, Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters suspended 'Operation Nasr,' claiming a painful response had been delivered. However, Iran conditioned further diplomacy on Israel ceasing hostilities in Lebanon. Simultaneously, Hezbollah used the Iranian support to pressure the Lebanese government to abandon U.S.-sponsored security negotiations with Israel and restore ties with Tehran.

The United States urged restraint to avoid a wider regional war, while Iran sought to leverage its military posture to pressure the Trump administration over the release of $12 billion in frozen assets. Despite the ceasefire, Israel remains on high alert, and Iran warns of further strikes if Israeli operations in southern Lebanon continue.
