UK and France Lead 50-Nation Mission to Secure Hormuz

The United Kingdom and France are co-leading a multinational coalition of approximately 50 nations to restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. The initiative follows a ten-week war between the U.S. and Iran that began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28, resulting in an Iranian blockade of the strait and a subsequent U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to the southern Red Sea as a preliminary positioning. While Macron later clarified in Nairobi that France would not act unilaterally and seeks a mission coordinated with Iran, the deployment signals a European effort to restore confidence for shipowners and insurers. Similarly, the UK is deploying the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon, Typhoon fighter jets, and £115 million in autonomous mine-hunting and counter-drone technology, including Kraken drone boats.

Iran has reacted with hostility, with officials warning that any unauthorized foreign naval presence would face a "decisive and immediate response." Tehran asserts that only the Islamic Republic of Iran can guarantee security in the waterway. Meanwhile, the U.S. has paused its own escort operation, Project Freedom, as President Donald Trump claims progress toward a deal, though he has simultaneously pressured European allies to increase their military contributions.

The mission faces significant urgency as a United Nations task force warned that the blockade of fertilizer shipments could trigger a humanitarian crisis, potentially forcing 45 million more people into hunger across Africa and Asia.
