Republicans Use Anti-Corporate Populism Ahead of Midterm Elections

Republican candidates and administration officials are targeting corporations, vaccines, and financial institutions using populist rhetoric to gain momentum before the upcoming midterm elections.

Republican candidates and administration officials are employing populist strategies and anti-corporate rhetoric across several states to build momentum for the upcoming midterm elections. Donald Trump recently eased sanctions on Russia to increase diesel exports, though the move coincided with a 15-cent per gallon increase in diesel prices.

At the federal level, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is campaigning against pesticides and vaccines. Vice President JD Vance has introduced measures to restrict skilled immigration and is reportedly attempting to revive peace negotiations with Iran.

State-level GOP figures are targeting specific industries to appeal to voters. In Texas, Attorney General and Senate nominee Ken Paxton launched investigations into food and clothing companies over the alleged use of toxic chemicals. In Iowa, GOP nominees Zach Lahn and Joe Mitchell are campaigning against vaccines and pesticides, with Lahn specifically calling for the removal of Covid vaccines from the market. Meanwhile, Kansas Senator Roger Marshall is targeting the banking sector, proposing a 10% interest rate cap on credit cards to combat what he describes as loan sharks.
