Trump Sanctions ICC Judges and European Union Officials

President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on eight judges of the International Criminal Court, including Canadian judge Kimberly Prost, and the court's chief prosecutor. The measures also target several European Union officials. The U.S. administration alleges these individuals intend to prosecute nationals of the United States or Israel without consent, following the ICC's 2024 arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant.

The sanctions freeze U.S. assets and bar the targeted judges from entering the United States, which disrupts their financial access and judicial independence. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the measures as "intimidation and coercion."

Canada's response has remained limited. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand raised the issue with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. However, Prime Minister Mark Carney has not formally denounced the sanctions or invoked the Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act to counter the U.S. action.
