Russia and Ukraine Trade Massive Aerial Strikes in June 2026

Russia and Ukraine entered a volatile retaliation cycle of deep-strike drone and missile attacks targeting civilian infrastructure and strategic military assets in early June 2026.

Russia and Ukraine entered a high-intensity cycle of long-range aerial warfare in early June 2026. On June 2, the Federal Government of Russia launched one of the largest assaults of the war, firing 73 missiles—including hypersonic Zircons—and over 600 drones. The barrage targeted Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv, killing at least 23 civilians and damaging residential blocks, clinics, and energy infrastructure.

Ukraine retaliated on June 3 with a coordinated drone campaign targeting St. Petersburg and the surrounding Leningrad region, coinciding with the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Ukrainian forces struck the Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Kronstadt naval base, damaging the guided-missile corvette Boikiy. Further strikes hit a weapons plant in Tambov and a passenger bus in the occupied Donetsk region, which killed seven civilians.

In response to the breakthroughs in Russian airspace, Vladimir Putin vowed to strengthen national air defenses. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized delays in the delivery of American Patriot interceptors and proposed direct talks with Putin to reach a ceasefire. Tensions further escalated in the Baltic region as Russia accused Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania of allowing Ukrainian drones to transit their airspace, prompting the European Commission to allocate 12 billion euros to bolster Baltic defenses. On the ground, Russian forces made tactical gains in the Donetsk region, effectively capturing the city of Kostyantynivka.
