Geoffrey Hinton Warns of AI Systemic Collapse
Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton warns that AI could trigger large-scale systemic failures and criticizes industry leaders for prioritizing profit over safety.
Nobel prize-winning computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton warned that humanity may have been better off never developing artificial intelligence. He suggested the technology could trigger a large-scale incident, such as a power grid blackout or a financial system collapse, within the next two years.
Hinton criticized the leaders of major AI firms, specifically naming Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg, and Elon Musk, alleging they prioritize profit over safety risks. He characterized recent AI-driven hacking attempts against the Hugging Face website as a warning shot. To mitigate these risks, Hinton called for a regulatory framework similar to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that would require independent statistical evidence of safety before any model is released.
While Hinton supports a mandatory testing plan endorsed by 33 countries, U.S. President Donald Trump rejects globalist control schemes. Trump advocates for industry self-regulation to ensure the United States maintains a competitive edge over China. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham intends to use the United Kingdom's G20 presidency to establish global principles for AI risk management.
