Iran Seeks Peace Talks While Threatening US Economic Interests

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani in Tehran on August 27 to discuss the cessation of hostilities and regional stability. Pezeshkian called for the resumption of a peace memorandum of understanding signed with the United States on June 18, asserting that while Iran does not seek war, it will not submit to bullying. During the visit, Iranian officials and the Qatari Prime Minister discussed a joint demining project and a temporary shipping corridor in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran also reached agreements with Oman regarding water shares and revenues.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, Iranian security officials maintained a hardline stance. Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, warned of a severe confrontation with the United States if the economic blockade continues, threatening to target American economic interests with intensity and force. Rezaei also threatened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming any future war would enter a new phase, particularly regarding Israel's presence in Lebanon.

President Donald Trump denied that any negotiations with Iran are currently taking place, stating he is not in a hurry for talks to resume. This tension follows a period of escalation that began with joint U.S.-Israeli attacks on February 28 and subsequent Iranian missile and drone responses.
