Donald Trump Announces President Xi Jinping Visit for September

President Donald Trump announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the United States around September 24 to discuss trade, technology, and geopolitical tensions.

President Donald Trump announced on July 6 that Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States around September 24, 2026. This would mark the first visit by the Chinese leader to the U.S. since November 2023. The summit is expected to take place concurrently with the United Nations General Assembly in New York and will focus on trade, technology, and geopolitical tensions between the two largest economies.

During a Rose Garden luncheon, Trump linked the visit to plans for a new White House state ballroom capable of hosting thousands of people. He described the proposed expansion as a national security necessity, stating the structure would be bulletproof, drone-proof, and missile-proof. The construction project is slated for completion by mid-2028.

The upcoming summit follows a May 2026 visit by Trump to Beijing regarding Taiwan, trade, and the Strait of Hormuz. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the Beijing trip produced few tangible results, although it ensured direct communication between the two leaders. While an official itinerary has not been released, the September meeting aims to establish a framework for cooperation on investment and trade.
