India Launches Campaign for UN Security Council Non-Permanent Seat
India is campaigning for a non-permanent UN Security Council seat for 2028-29, competing against Tajikistan with a focus on the Global South and maritime security.
The Government of India officially launched its campaign on July 14, 2026, to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term. At the UN headquarters in New York, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar introduced the SHANTI vision—Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity—which emphasizes a rules-based global order and the interests of the Global South.
India's priority agenda includes countering terror financing, ensuring maritime security through adherence to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and establishing ethical AI governance via the proposed MANAV framework. Jaishankar highlighted India's extensive peacekeeping record, noting the deployment of nearly 300,000 personnel across 50 missions. During the visit, Jaishankar also met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss cooperation and geopolitical developments in Ukraine, Sudan, and West Asia.
India will compete against Tajikistan for the single Asia-Pacific Group seat in elections scheduled for June 2027. While Tajikistan has received endorsement from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, India seeks to win a two-thirds majority vote in the 193-member General Assembly. New Delhi views this bid as a stepping stone toward its long-term objective of securing a permanent seat through comprehensive systemic reforms of the UNSC.
