Iran Adopts Strategy of Geographically Unrestricted Military Retaliation

Iran has revised its military doctrine to allow for strikes against targets outside West Asia in response to any future aggression by the United States and Israel.

The Government of Iran has revised its military deterrence strategy to allow for unlimited retaliation against aggressors, removing previous restrictions that limited targets to regional assets. Senior adviser Mohammad Mokhber announced that the geography of a threat will no longer determine the geography of the response, enabling strikes against targets outside of West Asia.

This shift follows a 39-day offensive by the United States and Israel in April, which concluded after a ceasefire brokered by regional countries. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned that any new military or terrorist attacks would be met with an immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response. Security Minister Mohsen Rezaei added that such attacks would result in devastating blows using new weapons, while army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia indicated that a future war could be longer than past conflicts and would not be confined to the region.

The escalation occurs as U.S. President Donald Trump alternates between threatening strikes and seeking a deal, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly advocates for full-scale conflict. Despite the military rhetoric, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran remains open to diplomacy, and Qatari mediators have held talks with Iranian officials to prevent further escalation.
