The Iran Talks That Only One Side Says Exist

On July 22, standing beside Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump described the state of play with Iran in a single breath. ^[1]

That pair — a claim of talks, a flat denial — has repeated at least five times since May. It is the unit the whole six months is built from. The cycles between them have been compressing. On June 24 the Islamabad MOU was the one real de-escalation: the blockade lifted, three stranded tankers released, a 60-day window opened. Within weeks it was gone. On July 10 Trump declared the ceasefire "OVER" and said Iran had "asked us to continue talks"; Iran's Foreign Ministry denied requesting anything, and a member of its delegation set the condition. ^[2]

Late July brought thirteen consecutive nights of bombing. On August 1, Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said a Hormuz deal was coming within 48 hours; Iran said it was only discussing shipping routes with Oman, and Trump answered with "a deal or total surrender." On August 27 came Operation Economic Outcast, an explicit campaign to collapse the regime. ^[3][4][5] Sixty days became two weeks became forty-eight hours, and each claim of talks was followed by a heavier blow. Notice who is not in the room. No American envoy has gone to Tehran; the traffic is carried by Qatar's prime minister, Pakistan's army chief, and Oman. A negotiation and a campaign to end the regime cannot run on the same track. You cannot reopen a waterway with a government you are simultaneously trying to collapse. That is why the diplomacy never produces a deal — only the impression of one, which is why each cycle restarts.
