Trump Meets World Leaders at UN General Assembly

President Donald Trump is conducting a series of bilateral meetings in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. On Monday, Trump met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion, the first presidential visit to the residence since 1981. Despite ideological clashes, the two agreed to begin technical talks on a $21 billion proposal to build 12,000 affordable housing units over Sunnyside Yard in Queens. During a joint press conference, Trump defended his ban on several news outlets from the White House, while Mamdani advocated for Haitian immigrants affected by the administration's cancellation of Temporary Protected Status.

Trump also coordinated with French President Emmanuel Macron at Trump Tower to protect critical infrastructure in West Asia and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The leaders pledged to seek a moratorium on strikes against energy and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. Macron further committed to supplying Ukraine with radars and interceptors to bolster air defenses.

On Tuesday, Trump is scheduled to address the assembly and meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss de-escalation and the reduction of hostilities. Trump has pressured Zelenskyy to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries, citing global fuel price impacts. Additionally, Trump will hold his first official meeting with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The encounter follows years of tension, including Burnham's previous claims that any politician meeting Trump should be "ashamed." The leaders are expected to discuss the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran and the delivery of interceptors to Ukraine.

Trump's itinerary also includes meetings with leaders from Japan, Venezuela, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. He is scheduled to travel to Washington on September 24 for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss trade and artificial intelligence.
