Israel Marks Third Anniversary of Hamas Attacks Amid Gaza Crisis

Israel commemorated the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a permanent ceasefire in the devastated Gaza Strip.

Israel marked the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2026, with nationwide memorials at the Nova music festival site and border communities. The original incursion killed approximately 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage. This year's commemoration is the first since all hostages were returned under a US-brokered deal by January 2026.

Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the military to hunt down and kill all remaining participants of the attack, reporting that 4,000 of the 6,000 attackers have been killed. While a US-backed ceasefire took effect in October 2025, the Israeli military continues to control over 60 percent of the Gaza Strip and has systematically demolished infrastructure in cities like Rafah and Jabaliya. The Gaza Ministry of Health reports over 74,200 Palestinian deaths since the war began, with 90 percent of the population displaced.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the initial attacks and the subsequent abuse of hostages, but warned that the current ceasefire has failed to provide security or adequate humanitarian relief. He urged all parties to transition the truce into a permanent peace. Internationally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirmed their support for Israel's security.

Domestically, Israel faces a divisive election on October 27. Public anger has grown over security failures, while some officials have pushed for far-right policies, including the distribution of government arms to settlers. Regional tensions remain high following Israeli and U.S. military actions against Iran.
