Zelenskiy to Meet Trump Amid Air Ceasefire Discussions
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will meet President Donald Trump in Washington as the U.S. and Ukraine discuss a potential air ceasefire to revive peace talks with Russia.
The United States and Ukraine are discussing a potential air ceasefire proposal to present to Russia as a mechanism for reviving peace talks. Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the President of Ukraine, has discussed the prospects for renewed negotiations with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. He is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday to further these discussions.
Ukrainian officials believe that continued drone and missile strikes targeting the Russian economy may influence President Vladimir Putin's willingness to negotiate. However, Russia has previously conditioned any halt to fighting on the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donbas region, a demand that Ukraine has rejected.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to confirm the ceasefire reports, characterizing them as premature newspaper accounts. While Peskov stated that Moscow does not know the credibility of these reports, he noted that Russia maintains dialogue channels with U.S. negotiators and will evaluate any future proposals based on Russian interests.
