Iran Rejects US Dialogue Amid Threats of Renewed Strikes

President Masoud Pezeshkian conditioned negotiations with the United States on the removal of sanctions and threats as both nations deploy military assets in the Middle East.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared Wednesday that dialogue with the United States is meaningless while Washington continues to issue threats, maintain sanctions, and engage in "bullying and aggression." Pezeshkian accused the U.S. of reneging on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a June pact intended to end military operations and restore navigation in the Strait of Hormuz following a war launched by the U.S. and Israel on February 28, 2026.

Tensions have escalated as the U.S. military reportedly developed plans for renewed strikes against Iranian energy and nuclear sites using GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bombs. President Donald Trump has deployed a third aircraft carrier strike group and an amphibious assault ship to the region. While Trump stated the U.S. will not attack before the November 3 midterm elections, he warned that the U.S. and Israel may soon "finish the job" if Iran does not change its behavior.

In response, Iran has increased attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and launched Houthi-led strikes against Saudi Arabian energy facilities and airports. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Tehran will only negotiate if the U.S. abandons its military options. Meanwhile, mediators from Qatar and Pakistan are attempting to break the diplomatic deadlock as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushes for a resumption of strikes against civilian, nuclear, and regime sites.
