Trump Invites Vladimir Putin to G20 Summit in Miami

President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 leaders meeting scheduled for December 14-15 at the Trump National Doral Miami resort in Florida. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, stating that the summit provides an opportunity for Putin to engage with Trump and other world leaders. This would mark Putin's first in-person G20 appearance since 2019.

The invitation follows a meeting between Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Rubio proposed a limited ceasefire regarding energy and grain as a starting point for broader agreements. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness to travel to Florida to meet Putin and a desire to end the war before winter, Lavrov told the UN Security Council that Russia will not pause its "special military operation."

The Kremlin expressed satisfaction with the invitation, though spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated it is premature to confirm attendance. Meanwhile, the move has drawn criticism from allies. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned the invitation could embolden Russian aggression, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham condemned Putin's "campaign of terror." Simultaneously, a coalition of 51 countries issued a joint declaration reaffirming support for Ukraine and condemning Russian attacks in the Black Sea.
