Israel Escalates Strikes in Lebanon as Ceasefire Collapses

A U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has deteriorated into a war of attrition, culminating in wide-scale Israeli military attacks across southern Lebanon on April 28, 2026. The Military of Israel ordered residents of more than a dozen villages to evacuate toward Sidon, citing Hezbollah's violations of the truce. This escalation follows weeks of daily exchanges, including Israeli strikes on weapons depots in the Bekaa Valley and Hezbollah drone and rocket attacks on northern Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz accused Hezbollah of dismantling the ceasefire. Katz warned that the group's defiance could lead to the destruction of all Lebanon. Meanwhile, Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem categorically rejected disarmament and direct negotiations between the Lebanese government and Israel, describing such talks as a grave sin. Qassem asserted that Iranian diplomatic pressure in Islamabad was the decisive factor in securing the initial ceasefire, which he now claims is irrelevant.

The conflict, which began March 2 following Hezbollah's attacks to avenge the death of Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, has displaced approximately 1.2 million Lebanese people. While Lebanese President Joseph Aoun sought direct talks to end the state of war, experts note the Lebanese government lacks the power to enforce disarmament laws against the entrenched militia. Internationally, U.S. President Donald Trump continues to mediate while managing a separate diplomatic deadlock with Iran, as Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to support regional peace during meetings with Iranian officials in Saint Petersburg.
