US and Iran Agree to 60-Day Peace Roadmap in Switzerland

The United States and Iran concluded a first round of high-level negotiations at the Lake Lucerne Summit in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, on June 22, 2026. Mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, the two nations agreed to a 60-day roadmap toward a final comprehensive peace deal to end a conflict that began in February 2026. Key outcomes include the establishment of a High-Level Committee for political oversight and a de-confliction cell involving the Lebanese government to monitor the cessation of military operations in Lebanon.

To ease maritime tensions, the parties created a direct communication line to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This follows a period of volatility where Iran announced the closure of the strait in response to Israeli strikes in Lebanon, a claim disputed by U.S. Central Command. In exchange for these security guarantees and a commitment to readmit International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors, the U.S. Treasury issued a 60-day general license authorizing the sale of Iranian oil and petrochemicals and agreed to release $12 billion in frozen assets, though the U.S. maintains these funds should be used for American agricultural purchases.

Despite the roadmap, the process remains strained. President Donald Trump issued several threats via social media to strike Iran if its proxies in Lebanon continued causing instability, which reportedly led to a temporary Iranian walkout during the summit. Additionally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to withdraw forces from a security zone in southern Lebanon, asserting that Israel is not bound by the U.S.-Iran interim agreement.
