Russia Strikes Energy Grid as Trump Pressures Ukraine
Russia launched massive strikes on Ukraine's energy grid while President Donald Trump pressured Kyiv to negotiate a peace deal amid reduced U.S. military support.
Russia launched a nighttime barrage of ballistic missiles and drones on Monday, striking 28 substations and critical facilities. Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported the attack left over 500,000 people without electricity, heat, and water, and killed a 21-year-old woman in Kyiv. This escalation follows an intensifying campaign of glide bomb strikes in the Donetsk region, where the military administration has expanded mandatory evacuation zones for families with children.
Ukraine faces these attacks amid strained relations with the United States. President Donald Trump has halted Patriot rocket supplies and pressured Kyiv to reach a deal with Moscow, suggesting that Zelenskyy should be replaced as the lead negotiator. While Zelenskyy claimed Ukraine received no early warning of the Monday strikes, Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that intelligence sharing had stopped. Ukraine also continues to face speed restrictions on SpaceX's military-grade satellite service.
In response, Ukraine launched over 1,000 drones at Russian oil facilities in St. Petersburg on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government continues Operation Vivaldi, retaking 16 villages and over 250 square kilometers of territory. Diplomatic tensions have further risen over reports of potential trilateral peace talks between the U.S., Russia, and China that would exclude Ukraine, a proposal Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha dismissed as feeding Vladimir Putin's appetite for self-aggrandizement.
