Trump Waives Russia Sanctions and Pushes Ukraine Peace Deal

President Donald Trump is facing bipartisan criticism for waiving Russian sanctions and restricting military aid to Ukraine while pursuing a trilateral peace summit.

President Donald Trump is facing bipartisan criticism in Washington and from European allies following a series of policy shifts that critics argue leave Ukraine vulnerable to Russian aggression. On October 16, Trump waived most anti-Russia sanctions previously enacted under legislation honoring the late Senator Lindsey Graham and attempted to purchase Russian diesel despite existing restrictions. He has further restricted intelligence sharing, refused to approve interceptor missile transfers to Kyiv, and reportedly oversaw the throttling of Starshield satellite internet services used by Ukraine.

Trump maintains these actions are part of a broader strategy to secure a peace deal and claims his dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin secured the release of American detainee Stephen Hubbard. He has proposed a trilateral summit in Shenzhen, China, with Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping that would exclude Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump has criticized Zelensky for failing to end the conflict sooner and has called for his replacement.

In response, Zelensky has expressed willingness to agree to a ceasefire that freezes existing battle lines, potentially ceding nearly a quarter of Ukrainian territory to end the war. He also proposed a meeting with Putin at the upcoming G20 summit in Florida. Meanwhile, Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, sparked further controversy by describing Putin as a humanitarian during a visit to St. Petersburg. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended the administration's policies, asserting that Ukraine would not exist as a sovereign state without U.S. assistance.
