Trump and Zelenskyy Discuss Energy Truce Amid Escalating Strikes

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York to discuss ending the war before winter. Trump pressured Zelenskyy to halt Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries, citing a serious hit to global diesel prices. In response, Zelenskyy proposed a reciprocal energy ceasefire, offering to stop targeting Russian fuel facilities if Russia ceases attacks on Ukraine's electricity, heating, and water infrastructure.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, hostilities intensified. Russia launched massive aerial assaults involving over 200 drones and missiles, killing multiple people in Dnipro and Kyiv and damaging critical energy sites. Simultaneously, Ukraine struck oil refineries in the Samara and Ufa regions of Russia. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported that both nations expressed interest in limited ceasefires regarding grain and energy, though no formal agreement was reached.

Zelenskyy further requested a winter support package of Patriot missiles and domestic manufacturing licenses from the United States. During his address to the General Assembly, he characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin as "Patient Zero" of the war and warned that Ukraine would make the winter painful for Russia if a truce is not reached. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected a temporary pause in hostilities, claiming such a break would only allow the West to arm Kyiv further.
