India and US Trade Negotiations Reach Difficult Plateau
Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that trade talks with the United States have stalled over a trade imbalance and the weaponization of tariffs.
Trade negotiations between India and the United States have reached a plateau, with further concessions from either side now considered very difficult. Speaking at the Munich Leaders Meeting in New Delhi on October 5, 2026, Nirmala Sitharaman, the Indian Finance Minister, stated that while movement remains possible if room to operate is found, the two nations have struggled to move beyond their current positions.
The two countries have been negotiating since February 2025 to resolve market access issues and deepen economic ties. Sitharaman identified the trade imbalance as a primary point of contention, noting that the deficit favors India and that the U.S. is seeking to reduce this gap. She observed a shift in global trade where tariffs are increasingly weaponized to address such imbalances rather than relying on traditional dialogue.
This assessment aligns with recent comments from U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who stated that an agreement is not imminent following meetings with Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal.
