Trump and Xi Extend Trade Truce and Launch AI Dialogue

President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping for a three-day state visit to Washington from September 23 to 25, 2026. The summit, marked by lavish ceremonies including a rare tarmac greeting at Joint Base Andrews and a state dinner attended by top tech CEOs, aimed to establish a relationship of strategic stability. The primary concrete outcome was a two-month extension of the Busan Agreement trade truce, moving the expiration date from November 10 to January 10, 2027.

The leaders agreed to a reciprocal tariff reduction on $30 billion of non-sensitive goods and established a Board of Trade and a Board of Investment. China further committed to importing at least 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in 2027 and 2028. On technology, the two nations launched a dialogue on the risks and benefits of what Trump rebranded as super intelligence (SI) and created a bilateral communication channel to manage AI-related security incidents.

Significant tensions persisted regarding Taiwan and Iran. President Xi urged the U.S. to oppose Taiwan independence, while Trump viewed a pending $14 billion arms package for the island as a negotiating chip. Trump privately warned Xi that Chinese support for Iran was totally unacceptable, following reports that Beijing provided satellite imagery used in attacks on U.S. troops. As gestures of goodwill, Xi announced the loan of two giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta and an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China for study exchanges. The leaders plan to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 summit in Miami in December.
