Donald Trump Faces Global Pushback During Diplomatic Push

President Donald Trump attempted to project American power this week through an address to the UN General Assembly and a White House summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. While Trump declared that "America is back," his efforts yielded limited results. The summit with Xi Jinping produced only a two-month extension of the existing trade truce, with significant disagreements remaining over artificial intelligence, Iran, and Taiwan, where Xi reportedly urged Trump to oppose Taiwanese independence.

Trump's diplomatic push occurs against the backdrop of a seven-month war with Iran, launched alongside Israel on February 28. The conflict has disrupted global energy supplies and pressured domestic energy prices, contributing to a decline in Trump's approval ratings. Additionally, while Trump failed to secure an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine or achieve his goal of owning Greenland, he did reach an agreement with the Government of Denmark to expand the U.S. military presence in the Arctic.

International resistance to the administration's approach has intensified. President Emmanuel Macron of France warned against a global return to the "law of the jungle," and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil criticized U.S. multilateralism and foreign interference in Brazil's territorial waters and upcoming October elections. These tensions signal a decline in Trump's international clout ahead of the November midterm elections.
