UK Shares Classified Missile Blueprints with Ukraine in Kyiv

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited Kyiv on August 24 to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence and reaffirm steadfast UK support. During his first foreign trip since taking office, Burnham authorized the defense manufacturer MBDA to release classified technical blueprints for British components of the SCALP cruise missile. This move enables Ukraine and France to establish local assembly lines by the end of the year, reducing Kyiv's reliance on Western stockpiles.

In exchange for the technology transfer, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed an AI Partnership agreement granting the UK Ministry of Defence access to the Avengers AI database. This repository contains millions of battlefield images used to train AI models to identify military assets. Burnham also co-chaired a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to address a critical shortage of Patriot interceptors. Zelenskyy requested at least 300 interceptors for the winter, noting that projected deliveries for 2026 have dropped to 264 from 675 in 2023.

The Kremlin condemned the missile data transfer, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that Britain is "participating in this war" and "adding fuel to the fire." Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned of consequences, while advisor Andrei Fedorov suggested UK drone factories could face attacks from unknown sources. Burnham dismissed these threats, questioning who started the conflict. He plans to travel to New York in September to lobby the United States for additional Patriot missile stocks during the UN General Assembly.
