Ukraine Hits Moscow Refineries After Russian Strike on Kyiv Monastery

Ukraine launched massive drone raids on Moscow's energy infrastructure in retaliation for Russian missile strikes that damaged a UNESCO World Heritage monastery in Kyiv.

Russia and Ukraine engaged in a massive aerial escalation between June 14 and June 19, 2026, marked by strategic strikes on cultural heritage and energy infrastructure. The conflict intensified when Russian forces launched a barrage of approximately 70 missiles and 611 drones, causing at least 11 deaths nationwide. A primary target was the 11th-century Dormition Cathedral within the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which suffered a major fire. While the Russian Defense Ministry claimed a malfunctioning American Patriot missile caused the damage, the Security Service of Ukraine reported recovering Russian Geran-2 drone fragments at the site.

In retaliation, Volodymyr Zelenskyy authorized some of the largest drone offensives of the war against Russian territory. Ukrainian forces targeted the Kapotnya oil refinery in Moscow twice in one week, damaging a facility that provides up to 40% of the capital's fuel. The strikes caused massive fires, disrupted flights at four major Moscow airports, and wounded over a dozen people. Additional Ukrainian strikes hit chemical plants in Tula and fuel depots in Yaroslavl and Krasnodar, contributing to a domestic fuel crisis in Russia.

Amidst the violence, U.S. President Donald Trump held separate phone calls with both leaders to discuss ending the conflict. During a G7 summit in France, Zelenskyy sought increased air defense support and a decisive international response to Russian attacks on cultural identity. Russia responded by vowing systematic, large-scale group strikes against Ukrainian military capabilities. The escalation concluded with Russian drone attacks on civilian merchant vessels in the Black Sea on June 19, killing one crew member.
