Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar detailed India's diplomatic efforts to mitigate the impact of the Ukraine conflict during the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta. Jaishankar reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi and Bishkek to address three specific priorities: protecting civilian shipping and seafarers, restoring grain exports via the Black Sea, and preventing attacks on energy infrastructure.
Jaishankar argued that the Global South is bearing the brunt of market politicization and energy shortages. He stated that "there are no military solutions; we have to find a diplomatic pathway" to resolve global conflicts. During the summit, he also advocated for the de-politicisation of markets and the need for more diversified global supply chains.
These efforts were coordinated with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who emphasized the necessity of keeping critical trade routes, including the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz, open. Jaishankar also met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss the Ukraine conflict and the situation in the Gulf.
