Zelenskyy Warns UN of Global War Spread by Putin

Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin as "patient zero" of a global infection of war. He warned that Putin's ambitions extend beyond Ukraine into Africa and Asia, potentially reaching NATO territory. Zelenskyy urged world leaders to intensify economic sanctions and limit trade to choke Russian war revenues, noting that Russia's budget deficit is currently larger than in any other year.

Zelenskyy reported that Russia has recruited citizens from 47 countries through "deception and tricks" to fight in Ukraine. He specifically announced the transfer of two captured North Korean soldiers, who had expressed a desire to defect, to South Korea. He accused North Korean leader Kim Jong Un of using soldiers "like currency" in exchange for Russian ballistic missile and drone technology.

While Zelenskyy expressed openness to a limited energy ceasefire, he warned that continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian heating and energy systems would result in retaliation to make the winter "painful for Russia too." This warning coincided with heavy Russian drone strikes on Kyiv that targeted residential buildings and a maternity hospital.

Diplomatic efforts continued on the sidelines, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reporting mutual interest in a limited ceasefire for grain and energy. U.S. President Donald Trump met with Zelenskyy and reiterated his belief that a deal could be brokered. Additionally, Trump invited Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami this December. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the UN Security Council that Russia is open to lasting peace negotiations but rejects a temporary pause in fighting.
