Trump Calls for Zelenskyy's Removal Amid Military Aid Cuts

President Donald Trump has curtailed military aid to Ukraine and called for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's removal to facilitate peace negotiations with Russia.

President Donald Trump has entered a severe political confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling for Zelenskyy's removal and asserting that Ukraine needs a new leader to negotiate a deal with Moscow. Trump accused Zelenskyy of being a mediocre comedian and a dictator who is killing Ukraine's men, while claiming that Russia has behaved adequately regarding the conflict.

Relations deteriorated as the Trump administration curtailed military aid and blocked a major sanctions package against Russia, including easing sanctions on Russian diesel to lower U.S. fuel prices. Zelenskyy reported that Patriot missile stockpiles are nearly exhausted, with fewer than 10 interceptors remaining, and alleged that U.S. officials refused to approve new deliveries. In response, Zelenskyy accused Trump of attempting to pressure Ukraine into capitulating to Russia.

Parallel disputes emerged over technology and intelligence. Zelenskyy claimed the U.S. restricted the Starshield satellite system and temporarily suspended critical intelligence sharing, hindering Ukraine's ability to intercept Russian weapons. While Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that disruptions were deliberate, he later confirmed the U.S. denied access to Starshield for attacks inside Russia. Elon Musk stated that any limits on the system are decided by the U.S. military and the president.

Zelenskyy traveled to Oslo on October 20 to meet with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Nordic leaders to repair ties with Washington. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom reaffirmed its support for Kyiv by accelerating the delivery of air defense missiles and announcing participation in military exercises in Poland.
