World Leaders Convene at UN to Push Two-State Solution

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada, alongside leaders from France, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia, co-hosted a high-level meeting titled "The Road Ahead" at the United Nations in New York on September 23, 2026. The summit, held during the 81st UN General Assembly, focused on implementing a two-state solution and a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza following the September 2025 New York Declaration.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres asserted that two independent, sovereign, and democratic states are the only credible path to regional security. European Council President Antonio Costa criticized the lack of progress on the ground, calling for the decommissioning of Hamas, an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the deployment of an International Stabilisation Force. French President Emmanuel Macron described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "shameful," while UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham condemned Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

In a separate closed-door session, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani condemned the Israeli government's rejection of the roadmap intended to implement the U.S. President's comprehensive plan to end the conflict. He urged the international community to pressure Israel to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and reaffirmed support for a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
