Putin Rejects Peace Talks and Plans Donbas Escalation
Vladimir Putin has dismissed ceasefire proposals and is preparing to escalate military operations in Donbas despite Donald Trump's claims that a resolution is near.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected proposals from his advisers to negotiate a ceasefire along current front lines, opting instead to escalate the conflict to capture the remainder of Ukraine's Donbas region. Sources close to the Kremlin indicate that Putin has dismissed compromise efforts to focus on total control of Donbas and may seek to establish a larger security buffer zone along the border. This hardline stance follows Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries and fuel infrastructure, which have caused nationwide shortages and contributed to Putin's lowest approval rating since 2022.
These developments contradict public optimism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated a resolution is "closer than people realise." Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has characterized the U.S. approach as possessing a duality, noting that Washington continues to supply military technology to Kyiv while sincerely committing to a peace process. Peskov dismissed the Trump administration's belief that military pressure could lead to a settlement as a "mistaken judgment," warning that further escalation would only prolong the conflict.
While the Kremlin maintains it is open to dialogue, Russia continues to launch missile and drone attacks on cities including Kyiv. Czech President Petr Pavel and Ukrainian intelligence warn that the window for negotiation is shrinking and that Putin may target industrial sites in Ukraine or NATO bases in Romania and the Baltic states to sow division within the alliance.
