Trump Brokers Ukraine Peace Efforts Amid NATO Summit

President Donald Trump is mediating efforts to end the war in Ukraine, asserting that a resolution is closer than publicly realized. Following separate phone calls on July 4 with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump indicated that both leaders want to settle the conflict. He designated envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to continue mediation efforts, including potential visits to Moscow.

Diplomatic optimism coincided with a severe escalation of violence. Russia launched massive aerial assaults on Kyiv and surrounding regions between July 6 and 7, deploying 68 missiles and 351 drones that killed at least 28 people. Ukraine responded with long-range drone strikes targeting Russian energy infrastructure, including oil refineries in St. Petersburg and Omsk, as well as facilities in Crimea.

Disputes also intensified over the strategic city of Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region. While Putin claimed the city's capture, describing it as having "great strategic significance," Zelenskyy dismissed the report as a "Russian lie."

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, on July 7 and 8, Trump met with Zelenskyy to renew peace efforts while pressuring alliance members to increase defense spending. Zelenskyy used the summit to propose a "Drone Deal Initiative" for joint unmanned aerial vehicle production and urged allies for more Patriot missile systems to counter Russian ballistic strikes. Trump also criticized NATO allies for their lack of support during a separate conflict with Iran, stating he had been "testing" their loyalty.
