UK Pledges Solidarity as US Eases Russian Diesel Sanctions

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged support to Ukraine after President Donald Trump eased sanctions on Russian diesel, sparking a diplomatic rift between Washington and Kyiv.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged complete solidarity with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during phone calls on October 10 and 11, following a diplomatic rift between Kyiv and Washington. The tension began after US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin reached a deal to allow Russia to supply millions of tonnes of diesel to the United States and global markets to lower fuel prices.

Zelensky condemned the agreement, arguing that allowing Russia to generate revenue from petroleum exports is an "investment in a war" that provides the Kremlin with funds to sustain military operations. In response to the criticism, Trump asserted that Ukraine needs a new president and accused Zelensky of failing to secure a peace agreement.

Burnham acknowledged that the period had been difficult for Ukraine and stated that the United Kingdom would continue to strengthen sanctions and take further action to constrain the Russian war machine. This commitment follows new designations against Russian targets announced earlier in the week. The two leaders agreed to meet in person in the coming days. The diplomatic friction occurred as Russian strikes killed at least 21 people in Ukraine, including four children.
