US Proposes Trilateral Peace Talks as NATO Membership Paused

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed US-led trilateral talks with Russia for late October while Secretary Marco Rubio stated Ukraine's NATO membership is not currently on the table.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in Reykjavik, Iceland, that Ukraine's accession to NATO is currently "not on the table." Speaking during a joint press availability with Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Rubio stated that Washington is primarily focused on ending the military conflict and noted that the consensus process required for new members remains a barrier. He expressed caution regarding immediate peace prospects, noting that current trend lines do not point toward an early resolution.

Despite these hurdles, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that U.S. negotiators have proposed a trilateral technical-level meeting between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States by the end of October. Zelenskyy responded positively to the proposal and suggested the United Arab Emirates as a potential venue for the talks.

These diplomatic efforts coincide with calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for both nations to settle the war to stop high casualty rates. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha revealed that Kyiv is evaluating four international peace proposals. Among these is a submission from India, which Sybiha described as the most comprehensive. Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the peace efforts of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
