Trump Brokers Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire Amid Scaled-Back Victory Day

Donald Trump mediated a three-day ceasefire and prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine during Moscow's scaled-down Victory Day celebrations.

U.S. President Donald Trump brokered a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine from May 9 to May 11, 2026, which included a reciprocal exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war. The truce coincided with Russia's 81st Victory Day celebrations. To facilitate the agreement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a decree declaring Moscow's Red Square a no-strike zone, though he framed the gesture as a humanitarian measure to secure the return of prisoners.

Amidst heightened security and fears of Ukrainian drone strikes, President Vladimir Putin oversaw a markedly scaled-back parade on May 9. For the first time in nearly two decades, the event omitted heavy military hardware such as tanks and missiles, instead displaying weaponry on digital screens. The parade featured North Korean troops for the first time and was attended by a limited number of foreign leaders, including Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.

Following the festivities, Putin declared the conflict in Ukraine is "coming to an end" and expressed openness to meeting Zelenskyy in a third country to sign a finalized peace treaty. However, the ceasefire was fraught with tension. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed nearly 9,000 Ukrainian violations, while Ukraine reported continued Russian assault operations.

Separately, Trump managed a parallel crisis with Iran, threatening renewed bombing campaigns if Tehran did not agree to a nuclear moratorium and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. While Trump expressed optimism that the Ukraine truce was the "beginning of the end," U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that broader diplomatic efforts had stagnated.
