Trump Threatens Iran After Suspected Plot at RAF Fairford
President Donald Trump threatened military action against Iran following the arrest and release of five suspects linked to a suspected terror plot at a UK airbase.
President Donald Trump threatened to blow up Iran following a suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England. The threats followed the weekend arrest of five British nationals in their mid-20s on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses after police found petrol in vans near the base. Although no explosive devices were recovered, the suspects were released on bail on Monday, a decision Trump criticized.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio both indicated that a foreign actor was involved, with Starmer stating there are strong indications that Iran played a part. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Israel provided the United Kingdom with advance intelligence regarding the Iranian-sponsored attack, noting that the UK responded by slapping sanctions on Israel shortly after. UK counter-terrorism policing confirmed that officers were mobilized Sunday based on received information.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the allegations, suggesting the suspects were actually working for foreign states. The RAF Fairford base has recently hosted American bombers after Starmer permitted the United States to use British bases for defensive strikes against Tehran during the Middle East war. While Trump initially threatened immediate military action, he later stated the U.S. is studying the situation.
