American Diplomacy Has Moved Into the Family Business
As the professional diplomatic corps drains away, the actual diplomacy runs through people and states tied to the president's family business — and every exception to the hard line is a personal grant to the family's allies and counterparties.
In October, a federal lawsuit put two names on the same page. One is Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates' national security advisor, whose sovereign fund put $2 billion into the crypto market using the president's family's tokens [1]. The other is Steve Witkoff, the sitting U.S. envoy to the Middle East — and, by the same filing, a co-founder of the family's crypto company, World Liberty Financial [2][1]. The suit alleges that pairing violates the Foreign Emoluments Clause [2]. Whatever a court eventually does with it, the document does something plainer: it shows that the people running American diplomacy and the people in the family's deals are the same people. The question underneath the filing is whether the presidency and the family business have become the same operation. What has emptied, and what has taken its place, answers that question largely yes. In December the president recalled nearly thirty career ambassadors; by March, 115 of the country's 195 ambassadorial posts sat vacant [3]. The refugee program has been suspended indefinitely since 2025 [4]. The professional apparatus — the corps built to run relations between states — is being taken apart. What has grown in its place is smaller, more personal, and often on the family payroll. The clearest case is the envoy himself. Witkoff carries the Russia file, and the Kremlin's spokesman has described his Moscow contacts as meaningful and very useful [5]. In Pakistan, meanwhile, a family associate was received as a dignitary, reportedly to ease communication with Washington [6]. That account rests on a single story, so treat it as an instance rather than a pillar; the envoy is the pillar. The governments brokering the Iran channel — Qatar, which mediates and holds the frozen funds; Oman, whose shipping routes the proposals cite; Pakistan, whose emissaries carried the channel to Tehran [7] — are the same countries where the Trump Organization has been building: an office tower, a skyscraper, a golf resort [8][9]. The intermediaries and the clients are the same list. The channel runs on two settings at once. In public, the president made the threat explicit.
We've knocked out their nuclear. We still have to take care of, I would say one or two sites, but we can do that in 10 minutes. — Donald Trump
On the same day, his secretary of state confirmed that the diplomatic talks continue through intermediaries in Qatar and Pakistan [10]. And the summit where the president says a Russia-Ukraine peace could be signed sits on his own property — the December G-20, at Trump National Doral [10]. Three exceptions make the pattern concrete. Flávio Bolsonaro, Brazil's defeated far-right candidate fleeing a money-laundering probe, was granted refuge after sixteen months of presidential lobbying that began in July 2025, when Trump called Brazil's prosecution of the family an attack on a political opponent [11].

He arrived on a private jet reportedly chartered by a Trump adviser, and the secretary of state said the government had no involvement in it [12]. The refuge went to a family at the center of the president's own movement — a grant to an ideological ally. Refugee admissions show the same shape at scale. The formal door has been closed since 2025 [4], but under a cap of 7,500 built to prioritize white Afrikaners alleging discrimination, the United States admitted 4,499 people between October and March — 4,496 of them South Africans, and three from Afghanistan [13]. The exception was built for a group at the center of the president's own politics. Then there is the money. In October 2025 the UAE's sovereign fund put $2 billion into Binance using the family's crypto tokens; months later, the president authorized the UAE to purchase advanced Nvidia chips [1]. The sequence is on the calendar, and no source establishes the investment as payment for the authorization. What sits on the record is the order of events: the investment first, the authorization after. None of this means formal statecraft is gone. At the September UN General Assembly the president personally coordinated with Macron on the Strait of Hormuz and scheduled a summit with Xi [14]. And the allies are hedging: Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia signed a defensive pact of their own, and Canada is courting membership in the European Union [15]. The personal channel runs alongside leader-level summitry, not instead of it. The president's own account of the arrangement is matter-of-fact.
I found out that nobody cared — Donald Trump
His press secretary has put the denial on the record in her own terms: the president and his family, she says, have never engaged and will never engage in conflicts of interest [16]. The department built to conduct relations between states keeps disclaiming the work. The work, meanwhile, keeps moving through a channel that is also the family's business.
